Shuffling off to Buffalo!

I'm on my way to covarla's wedding in Buffalo! En lieu of doing actual work this trip, I've taken five days off to relax, read, write/blog and catch up with friends.

Looking forward to updating the blog as well :-)

Anyway, boarding in 35 minutes so I'm going to enjoy a snack and get ready to start my vacation.

Grenades and Pipe Bombs and Opium, oh my!

So, I was originally posting this on my Facebook but I didn't think the broken posts could really put this bullshit into proper context and perspective for people.

You see, there are certain people that I trust with Grenade launchers, like stoicdaydreamer who uses one for a living as a combat commander in the Border Guard over in Israel. She knows what she's doing with one, and I think it's awesome that she does.

There are other people, however, that I wouldn't trust with a pair of rounded off safety scissors...I like to call them everyone else I share this Island with for the next 132 days.

You see, on March 6, 2012 police found explosives and what amounts to an insane amount of weapons in a Woodmere home on Long Island, New York.

Included in the stash were things like pipe bombs and grenades and guns. He was also apparently growing a LOT of weed.

Apparently he's going through a divorce (I can't imagine why) and this is how he's coping, or something. Also, it's not even his own house...oh no, it's his parents' house which he was staying at while they were in Florida.

What I found most impressive out of this whole thing (and the resulting and continuing 'developing story') was the balls that are attached to this guy's lawyer, because it takes a serious pair of balls to be able to write off a weapons stash and enough weed to incapacitate an elephant as if it were nothing more than a parking violation, plead not guilty, and then challenge the search and seek to have the evidence thrown out in open court without cracking a shit-eating smile.

I thought to myself "well, I don't often give the police force on Long Island a whole lot of respect, but well done guys, well done..." and returned to my busy day of doing whatever the fuck it is that I do these days while ticking off how much time I have left until I move off this sandbar.

However, the doing whatever the fuck it is that I do was soon interrupted by a rather troubling news story on March 9, 2012...because apparently the first crazy dude isn't the only one on the Island who's looking to blow shit up with grenades!!

Oh no, not fifteen minutes from where I live, in East Meadow, a man apparently thought that his life was just a little too mundane (and lacking in firepower). Being a prodigious and highly motivated pothead, he decided that he need to grab himself some assault rifles and grenade launchers while also doing other things, like assaulting his girlfriend.

In both cases - by the way - neither person would have been caught if they weren't face slappingly stupid. The first tripped a silent alarm IN THE HOUSE HE WAS LEGALLY STAYING IN FOR GOD KNOWS HOW LONG IT TAKES TO AMASS A WEAPONS ARSENAL. In the second case, it was because Mr. Domestic Violence himself was walking along the highway after having another domestic violence dispute with his girlfriend AND GAVE THE POLICE PERMISSION TO SEARCH HIS HOME WITHOUT A WARRANT!

Also, both guys have no known connection to terror, extremist, separatist or supremacist groups. Just two dudes, living on Long Island, who needed some weed and firepower.

I thought to myself, well...at least NOW we're in the clear...only to refresh my browser and then see that I had MISSED a news story from the day BEFORE the second stash was found, because why wouldn't there be an international opium smuggling operation with ties to both Long Island and Iran to keep the Long Island police force busy as well?

What absolutely pisses me off the most though is that here I am, shmucky the clown, working a barely above minimum wage, absolutely thankless job and these two losers somehow can afford property AND WEAPONS ARSENALS on Long Island while I can't even get my Carmex through JFK airport without putting it in a little zip-lock baggy.

Beautiful...simply beautiful, I thought, standing out on the balcony - the mirpeset - of my apartment in Ashdod. A city of beauty, though not one inclined towards academics...the veneer of new apartments hiding what was, in reality, a fugue state of mind more worthy of a Buffalo bender blackout weekend than a deluxe beach city with stacked high rises, the waves crashing just a few blocks from our building.

I thought of the old, yellowed copy of Rumble Fish I first picked up when I was six or eight and sleeping on a basement floor in Philadelphia, and I was suddenly sad that I had given up smoking tobacco a few years earlier, and shamelessly mournful that other substances couldn't be enjoyed until after my military ID was cut in two and I was discharged in what then seemed like something that would amount to multiple lifetimes.

Laundry spinning...sort of...in a mostly working washing machine, a beautiful new kitchen completely empty and devoid of anything that any human would consider food. Some bread with all the nutrients removed that was whiter than my Ashkenazic skin was freshly purchased and waiting on the counter next to some army cheese I had stolen from the base kitchen earlier in the week, in what had now become a routine of constantly swindling the base chef out of any food that wasn't locked down (and even then, locks have a funny way of opening when you're hungry enough). We had purchased an onion earlier in the day, the biggest one we could afford, in the hopes that it would last through the weekend and it was tempting us next to the sandwich press to start early, to eat all of what we had now. We knew better...we knew what giving into that temptation would mean, and so we waited.

The usual filler of a box of popcorn alongside a jug of the cheapest store brand cola that a pair of starving soldiers could afford to buy on military welfare sat in front of the microwave, borrowed packets of ketchup from the local fast food restaurants were kept neatly in the fridge.

British comedy subtitled in Hebrew flickered across the television screen in the living room, like the ashes from the cigarette dangling from my friends mouth - I can't remember what brand he smoked now, but I remember it being only one step better than the Nabalus brand that the Kibbutznikim smoked and miles away from the Marlboro and Lebanese Cedar that I used to enjoy as an undergrad. Whatever it was, it smelled good on him...he was incredibly handsome.

We were other men, in another life, we were the story, both trite and real, experienced by so many and only understandable by those who sat in the same two seats that we sat in every weekend, eating the same toasted cheese, onion and ketchup sandwiches, watching the same british comedy. Whether or not they did it before or after us wasn't as important as the fact that they did it at all.

Deep Dish Musings

I just got back from Chicago.

It was an absolutely amazing trip, to an absolutely amazing city. =

I'll post about it much more in detail a little bit later (probably with the release of my next travelogue) but it gave me a lot to think about, a lot to process, and a lot of positive energy to finish writing my business plan, setup my LLC, and to start socking away cash.

Most importantly, it gave me a lot of hope - this entire thing is do-able on some really awesome levels.

Now...for cleaning, and organizing, and email writing, and presentation and spreadsheet making...and paying penance to my poodle, who is quite upset that I had the audacity to leave the house for more than five minutes.

Our Increasingly Mobile Lives

It's a very weird feeling being back in New York. This phase of transition is the third to last phase before I transition into being a full time professional and it's weird to be closer to the end than the beginning.

I have this next degree to finish, the licensing exam and the national exam and then I can setup my practice. It's exciting, it's scary, it's a lot of things. I'm not trying to rush the journey but I'd also really like to "be there" already, not living paycheck to paycheck, not going to school, working and studying but just going to work and then coming home to my hobbies, hiking, camping, kayaking, etc.

Right now I'm only working as I wait for school to start. I'm not used to having all this free time - part of it I'm using to better myself (Weight Watchers, eventually working out), part getting myself organized and ready for school, part planning my future and my future business and part just relaxing.

Somewhere after the licensing and national exams and before the move I'll be taking the last big trip I'll be on for awhile (I'll never give up traveling, but it'll be awhile before I can travel again once my practice is setup - the first few years are the hardest).

I'm experimenting with blogging only from my iPhone in my continuing attempt to do away with needing my desktop and in preparation for writing while on the trail in India, Tibet and Peru.

I'm digging the software interface.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to my vacation/pre-Chicago move reconnaissance trip this weekend.

An incredibly quick re-cap for those who feel a bit out of the loop

I made Aliyah to Israel, landing as an immigrant on December 27, 2007 and found myself on Kibbutz Ma'agan Michael milking cows in the north while studying on their Ulpan for six months. I then took a month long break in the United States before returning to Israel and enlisting in the IDF on August 20, 2008 - I spent three months at Mehve Alon where I completed basic training and a Hebrew course. I was then transferred to the Foreign Relations Branch at the IDF Ground Forces Command where I was the assistant to the Head of the Foreign Relations Branch. During this time, to keep myself occupied, I setup the first Ground Forces wide ESL Program. After a year and a half in this position I was sent on the NCO course for Foreign Relations, which I passed. I was then transferred back to the Foreign Relations Branch at the Ground Forces Command and was moved to the Overseas Office. After being transferred to the Overseas Office I was sent on the NCO course for Information Security, which I passed, and was then sent back to the Foreign Relations Branch at the IDF Ground Forces Command.

In my position in the Overseas Office I was responsible for mission management - sending delegations around the world on behalf of the Ground Forces Command. With two weeks left to complete my service, I was then offered a contract by the Overseas Training Division to be the Instruction NCO on the Battalion Commanders Course, where I served as one of eight commanders, with ten cadets underneath us collectively. I was responsible for translating the course and creating all of the instructional material to mold our cadets into battalion commanders. We were incredibly successful in our mission and today our cadets are serving as Battalion Commanders in their own countries, applying the lessons we taught them in the field.

Towards the end of my service, I was once again offered contracts - though I was incredibly touched to have even been asked to continue my service, I declined them with thanks.

Having survived for 37 months on army service at the grace of Israeli welfare, I decided to complete my M.A. at my parents house on Long Island so I could once again rebuild my nest egg, work, and study without having to worry about constantly foraging for, or stealing, food.

Having been accepted to the Open University of Israel I began my studies at the Open University through their online system - but I wasn't happy, and I didn't feel that running after these two initials after my name was going to lead me to any further answers of where I wanted to live, what I wanted to be, what I wanted to do with myself - whatever that was I knew it wasn't this endless, and mind-numbing mental masturbation with people who think that they can represent the very depths of their soul or imagination by discussing someone else's two dimensional black and white work as if it were their own unique production, and not an argument that has been rehashed and milked dry year after year - something was lacking, something was out of balance.

I wanted something more, I was looking for something a little more "אמיתי" (Amiti - personal, genuine, something that moves the soul)...I was looking for something real.

When I was 16 I considered going to massage school instead of university, but opted to follow the advice (or conventional wisdom if you will of "get a real degree") - and I'm glad I did.

If I didn't, I would have never began studying languages, I would have never met some of my closest friends, I would have never posted in a language blog where I would have never met Itai (nir1), and if I didn't meet Itai, I probably would have never made that first trip to Israel, and then I would have never moved to Israel and received Israeli citizenship, and I would have never spent 37 months in the IDF or six months milking cows - never, ever, play with the time line - and never have any regrets.

After withdrawing from the Open University - happily and as far from disappointment as you can get before someone locks you up for being a little too happy, I applied - and was accepted - to the New York College of Health Professions and their school of Massage Therapy.

I begin my studies to become a massage therapist in May and - providing all goes according to plan - I will be graduating in April 2014, and licensed by August 2014. My first tri-mester is filled with Anatomy & Physiology I, Myology I, Fundamentals of Holistic & Public Health, Introduction to the Physical Arts and Swedish Technique I.

After licensing it's my goal to pass the national boards and certification exam and to then travel to India, Thailand, Tibet and Israel to study different techniques in these countries before opening up my wellness center in 2015.

I look forward to a meaningful career, and lots of travel.

All things flow into each other

Part of this journey has also been the requirement to look within myself and to change the things that I don't think are healthy - spiritually or physically. To that end I joined Weight Watchers seven weeks ago to get a handle on something that I've struggled with my entire life.

I'm down 16.4lbs since joining and It's the first time in years that I'm not starving all the time, and it marks a period in my life where I'm eating the healthiest I have ever eaten.

One of the requirements of the New York College of Health Professions is that students takes a Physical Art - either Yoga, Tai Chi or Qigong which means that for the next two years I get to work out with my peers and tone up - it is both healthy for me (as a person) and as someone who wants to go on to open a wellness center and attain a Master's of Public Health, critical to walk the walk of health and wellness.

The past few weeks I've also noticed that I was having some fatigue issues. While sitting down for lunch with a friend today, I realized that having lived in the south of Israel for the past four years that what I was lacking under Long Island's grey skies was sunlight and therefore good old Vitamin D.

I took one supplement this evening and I'm already feeling better. It's clearly something I'm going to have to add to my daily regimen of vitamins until the summer comes around.

Getting Ready For School

I've ordered my first massage table and my room is currently in the process of being transformed into a massage studio - while I'm forbidden from advertising my services, referring to myself as a massage therapist, or from accepting money or tips I am expected to practice (and practice regularly) the techniques I learn at school, which means that my friends and family get to become some very, very relaxed guinea pigs.

I've also spent a small fortune on text books. Fortunately, since classes don't start for another 86 days, 8 hours, 12 minutes and 15 seconds I'll have time to go through the books, read the ones on public health and practice management, color in the anatomy and physiology books, and work with the flash cards before classes start.

I do feel a little bit bad though...my admissions officer, financial aid officer and future adviser really don't know what kind of ~~stalker~~ pro-active student they're dealing with (though I think that they're starting to get a clue).

Chicago

There is approximately 15 days, 8 hours, 9 minutes and 42 seconds standing between me and my vacation in Chicago...I can't wait.

And now that we're all caught up, I need to make lunch for work tomorrow (Thursday's my 12 hour shift) and figure out where I'm going for Friday night services: the synagogue my family doesn't go to anymore, the gay synagogue, the reform synagogue, the conservative synagogue or the orthodox synagogue...that or maybe I'll just run in the woods and scream...it worked for a few great rabbis.
